New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill Joins the U.S. Climate Alliance

March 27, 2026

WASHINGTON,D.C.New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill today announced that she has joined the U.S. Climate Alliance, a bipartisan coalition of governors — representing approximately 60 percent of the U.S. economy and 55 percent of the U.S. population — all committed to confronting climate change through state-led, high-impact action. New Jersey joined the coalition in 2018, and today’s announcement confirms the state’s continued membership in the Alliance.

“I’m proud to join the U.S. Climate Alliance as we take coordinated, ambitious action to lower costs and protect public health through investments in clean, low-cost power generation. This partnership strengthens New Jersey’s ability to build a cleaner, more reliable grid, fuel economic growth, and ensure environmental sustainability for every community — here at home and across the country,” said Governor Sherrill.

On her first day in office, Governor Sherrill signed two executive orders to deliver immediate ratepayer relief and freeze rate hikes for New Jersey families and to massively expand in-state power generation — including solar and battery storage in the short-term, and nuclear power in the long-term — to lower electric bills. Governor Sherrill also recently signed legislation to accelerate progress toward the state’s clean energy goals and to expand energy storage in New Jersey.

“From day one, Governor Sherril has moved swiftly and decisively to cut harmful pollution and consumer costs,” said U.S. Climate Alliance Executive Director Casey Katims. “We’re thrilled to welcome the governor’s bold leadership into the Alliance, which will strengthen our work and keep America moving forward.”

Launched in 2017 by the governors of Washington, New York, and California to fill the void left by the U.S. federal government’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, the Alliance has grown to include 24 governors from across the country. Governors in the Alliance have pledged to continue working to achieve U.S. climate goals, including collectively reducing net greenhouse gas emissions at least 50-52 percent by 2030 and 61-66 percent by 2035, both below 2005 levels, and collectively achieving overall net-zero greenhouse gas emissions no later than 2050.

The Alliance’s states and territories continue to advance innovative and impactful climate solutions to grow the economy, create jobs, and protect public health, and have a long record of action and results. In fact, the latest data shows that as of 2023, the Alliance has reduced its collective net greenhouse gas emissions by 24 percent below 2005 levels, while increasing collective GDP by 34 percent. During that time, Alliance members also added nearly 200 gigawatts of new electricity generation capacity to meet growing energy demand, while simultaneously reducing carbon pollution in the electricity sector by 45 percent.

Since launching the Alliance, members have advanced more than 2,300 bold actions and innovative policies to tackle climate pollution and build resilience to the impacts of climate change. Thanks to these and other efforts, U.S. markets are rapidly transforming toward cleaner technologies and cleaner energy.

Last year, the Alliance welcomed three new governors to the coalition, Delaware Governor Matt Meyer, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, and Washington Governor Bob Ferguson, who also continued their states’ membership in the Alliance.

About the Alliance

Launched in 2017 by the governors of Washington, New York, and California to help fill the void left by the U.S. federal government’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, the Alliance has grown to include 24 governors from across the U.S. representing approximately 60 percent of the U.S. economy and 55 percent of the U.S. population. Governors in the Alliance have pledged to collectively reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 26-28 percent by 2025, 50-52 percent by 2030, and 61-66 percent by 2035, all below 2005 levels, and collectively achieve overall net-zero greenhouse gas emissions as soon as practicable, and no later than 2050.

The Alliance’s states and territories continue to advance innovative and impactful climate solutions to grow the economy, create jobs, and protect public health, and have a long record of action and results. In fact, the latest data shows that as of 2023, the Alliance has reduced its collective net greenhouse gas emissions by 24 percent below 2005 levels, while increasing collective GDP by 34 percent, and is on track to meet its near-term climate goal of reducing collective greenhouse gas emissions 26 percent below 2005 levels by 2025.
